A NON-CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF THE WÊ TOTEMIC MYTHS OF IVORY COAST: THE EXAMPLES OF THE MYTHS OF THE HEN AND THE FISH

Résumé en anglais:

In a world in the midst of an ecological crisis, where certain human activities are destabilizing all terrestrial ecosystems,African oral literature – and in particular totemic myths – stands as a bulwark,an aesthetic and ethical safeguard whose common moral denominator is to raise and maintain community ecological awareness. This is done through injunctions aimed at preventing the abusive destruction of the biosphere and the abiosphère. The Wêsociety, notably the Zranhan andSohounbo tribes of the Blaon (Central) and Zagnè cantons in the department of Duékoué, thus offers many totemic myths that recount the origin of community dietary taboos concerning animals such as chickens and fish.
