TIME AND THE HUMAN CONDITION IN A TECHNOLOGICALLY DISENCHANTED WORLD ACCORDING TO BERGSON

Résumé en anglais:

Time, long underestimated by some authors such as Aristotle, Newton, and Kant, and by scientists, is said to be at the root of an inauthentic existence. Sometimes considered a static, measurable given, sometimes linked to space, this flawed conception of time has allowed techno-science to experience unprecedented development, both in modern medicine and in improving the conditions of human existence. Unfortunately, treating time as a measurable and controllable reality is to empty it of its essence, of what is most intimate about it: change, creativity, unpredictability, and heterogeneity. Thus, the dimension of time that can be controlled by modern technology is precisely what Bergson calls spatialized time. It is therefore the experience of spatial time that has led to humanity's loss of meaning and plunged it into chaos. Human existence is now threatened by the rise of techniques and technologies. This jeopardizes the future of generations to come. Faced with such a reality, Bergson, in his positive metaphysics, invites us to an authentic life, placing us within the framework of time so that we may experience what he calls duration. Duration, as a lived psychological experience, is the ideal path for any human being seeking to rediscover their authenticity.
