ETHNOGRAPHIC LOOK AT CERAMIC ACTIVITY AMONG THE WOLOF IN SENEGAL: THE CASE OF THE POTTER CASTE
Résumé en anglais:
This study focuses on the caste system in the Wolof community, paying particular attention to the artisan group. The aim of this research is to analyze the place and status of women potters in Wolof society in Senegal. The methodological approach emphasizes observation, interviews with potters, key informants from an ethnographic perspective, and the use of written documents in the Wolof context. Traditional Wolof society has a solidly hierarchical and segregated organization that comes from a socio-historical dynamic. This type of hierarchical social organization is based on criteria that determine the existence of the potter caste. The latter follows socio-cultural norms in the classification of the social pyramid and oversees ceramic activities within the Wolof space. The profession and status of the women potters are based on well-defined social norms. These norms are being disrupted by internal and external factors within Wolof society.
