The notion of the heart (ib) in Egyptian beliefs for eternity in the New Kingdom (1580-1085 BC)
Résumé en anglais:
To define the notion of the heart within Egyptian beliefs regarding eternity during the New Kingdom is to immediately raise the question of the rupture and continuity of life. Indeed, during the New Kingdom—with the development of funerary literature and, above all, the increased individualization of judgment—the heart became a central entity for survival and a guarantor of eternity. In approaching the notion of the heart in Ancient Egypt, the following question warrants consideration : how does the Egyptian conception of the heart contribute to life in eternity within funerary beliefs ? Drawing upon funerary sources and existing literature on the subject, this work demonstrates that the heart is at the very center of post-mortem life in Ancient Egypt. The ambition of this reflection is to show that the challenges of accessing eternity posed by the heart have a socio-anthropological impact. Thus, three essential points are decisive in carrying out this study: general considerations of the heart among the ancient egyptians, the heart as an incorruptible witness before the tribunal of osiris, the heart as a guarantor of eternity.
