THE CONTRIBUTION OF THE DIAMOND TO THE SOCIOECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT OF THE TORTIYA REGION (IVORY COAST), 1946-2005
Résumé en anglais:
The Tortiya region, located in northern Côte d'Ivoire, has been one of the country's main diamond mining areas since the colonial period. Discovered in 1946 and developed from 1948 onwards, diamond mining profoundly influenced the economic, social, and spatial dynamics of this region until the beginning of the 21st century. This article aims to demonstrate the contribution of diamond mining to the socio-economic development of Tortiya between 1946 and 2005, highlighting both the positive impacts and the structural limitations of this extractive activity. To conduct this study, an analysis of information gathered from printed sources and bibliographic documentation allowed for the selection of data deemed credible. This study reveals that diamonds significantly contributed to local economic growth and the urbanization of Tortiya. The depletion of industrial deposits led to the decline of the formal sector and fostered the development of artisanal mining. Whether industrial or artisanal, diamond mining in Tortiya has also caused significant environmental damage.
